What are the basic tech specs for BaseLantern and BaseLanternXL?

How do I charge the BaseLantern?

You can charge the BaseLantern at home via USB on your computer, wall-outlet etc. If you’re off-grid, you can also charge it via the BioLite SolarPanel 5 Series or the BioLite BaseCamp Stove! (And yes, other solar panels will work, too)

Are BaseLantern and BaseLanternXL the same size?

Yes! They are the same footprint, however the BaseLanternXL will weigh slightly more because there’s a larger battery inside. (1.31 lbs vs 1.42 lbs)

Can I charge my laptop from the BaseLantern?

Nope. But you can charge tablets, phones, cameras, speakers, fitness trackers, and lots of other devices.

How water resistant is the BaseLantern?

The BaseLantern has an IPX4 rating which means it can withstand splashing of water. If you’re in a place where it can get really really wet, we suggest bringing a drybag along!

How many SiteLights can I chain from the BaseLantern?

Technically speaking, as many as you like! Our recommended max is to string up [4] per SiteLight port for a total of [8] SiteLights.

Will shipping be extra?

When you select your pledge level, you will be prompted to select your country as well. This will clearly indicate any shipping fees associated with your pledge. No additional costs will happen after that! To INTERNATIONAL customers: a few folks have remarked that shipping feels high - we want to reiterate that our fees INCLUDE all duties and taxes so that you won’t get surprised by any additional fees. Many other campaigns do not do this which is why their shipping appears lower at first, but you get an unexpected surcharge upon delivery (which feels like a bummer of an experience in our opinion). And no, we cannot mark your unit as a gift to get around duties, it’s illegal.

If I pledge a level that has multiple products, can you ship some items sooner?

Unfortunately, we cannot. Splitting shipments adds additional costs and requires manual processing of each order that eats up a lot of time (a LOT). That is time we need to be answering messages from backers, tracking down technical info from our engineers, and getting the BaseLantern and app produced on time. We totally understand wanting to have some of this gear before summer hits; if your timelines are more urgent, we recommend grabbing the rest of our products on BioLiteEnergy.com (if you sign up with your email you’ll be in the loop about any upcoming offers, promos, etc). Part of the awesome savings you see on our Kickstarter Reward Levels and Add-ons factors in thanking you for your patience for a later delivery time :)

Can I reserve multiple BaseLanterns with my pledge?

Backers currently cannot order multiple BaseLanterns to their pledge level; all units in our first October wave are accounted for. However, we have a pre-order portal open right now in IndieGoGo (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/biolite-baselantern-smartgrid-goes-off-grid–4/x/14328672#/) for units that will ship in December and we will open up multi-unit availability on our website in mid-August.

Will the BaseLantern be in retail stores?

Yes, we are planning to carry the BaseLantern with retail partners. A few key locations will have the BaseLantern in the late fall. Four important things: 1) Our Kickstarter pledge levels are the best deal you will find on the BaseLantern and BaseLantern/SiteLight Combos (significant savings, no tax, bonus items, woo!). Thank you for supporting us from the beginning. 2) No retail outlets will be carrying the BaseLanternXL in 2016 3) Kickstarter backers will be receiving a FREE carry case as part of unlocking our $800k stretch goal (huzzah!) 4) BaseLantern Kickstarter Rewards will ship before BaseLanterns are in stores. If this gets mixed up for any reason, we will notify our backers immediately (but we are doing everything we can to ensure it does not).

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
